Mapping The Shambles

The name Shambles derives from the Old English word for a stool, evolved to stall and by the 15th century to mean a butchery.

The Shambles

Marketplace

This area was where the original marketplace stood.

Apart from the market itself there was the first and Elizabethan market cross, a tollhouse, a courthouse, stocks and a whipping post, the town well, the town drain, a butchery and many stalls.

The Shambles

Well

There was a well – now covered over.
Probably the town drain was also here.
