Harry Carter (1906-1983) was one of the many artists, craftsmen and engineers of the Carter family. A cousin of Howard Carter who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun he grew up in Swaffham and taught Art and Craft at Hamond’s Grammar School and at the Convent school in the town.

Today he is probably best known for the wooden town signs in many of the towns and villages in Norfolk and beyond which always depicted the story of the town or village. One of his early signs was a reconstruction of the original Pedlar town sign in the 1930s.

He was invited to join a team of archaeologists in Egypt as a tomb painting copyist and soon developed a love for archaeology.
