The Shambles

The Occupants

The outlined area shows the three buildings occupied by William Parsons in 1845 for his gunshop, workshop and the Post Office. He also occupied a gunshop opposite on the north side.

The occupiers of the three buildings behind in 1845 were:

150 – Peter Walden – house. A baker
149 – James Green – house. A hostler
148 – John Watson – house and yard. A victualler
This image from March 1931 shows the very old Post Office on the left – F.E Dickerson’s shop – and the next two cottages.

Unfortunately, the occupants of them have yet to be determined.

The properties were demolished as part of the regeneration scheme from the 1940s and a new Tourist Information Centre with toilet and bus shelter was built and opened in 1991.
