Lacks Harness and saddle makers, next to Hillside, ca 1862
John Lack, sadler and ironmonger, settled on the Marketplace in about 1813 but whether in this building is not known.
His son William Lack continued the business and was at this house in 1845. The next two generations, both William, followed him but in the early 1900s the grandson, William Thomas, like many young men at that time, left Swaffham for London and the Lack name disappears from the business.
The shop was then taken over by Arthur Layen Lowe as a grocery and provisions’ store until 1931 when it was bought by Clifford Arthur Mallett.
C.A.Mallet’s grocery and wine shop mid 1940s. After the Malletts retired in 1966 the premises were taken over by T.R. Wagg, a bakers’ business from Docking which included a coffee shop.
Waggs remained in Swaffham until the company closed after the death of T.R in 1973 and a new burger bar, T.P Foods, took its place with amusements upstairs.
However, in 1983 that, too, closed and Abbotts Estate Agents moved in, still including the amusements, although the ground floor was split into two, where now the Nationwide Building Society is.
Abbotts closed in about 2020 and was replaced by Inheritance Legal Services
