William Gould

The first records of William Gould as a Swaffham bookseller were in advertising in local newspapers in 1859.

A staunch Baptist by religion and radical in politics William Gould was also very involved in local affairs.

His son John carried on the business after his father’s death in 1905 and expanded it to include toys, china, music and musical instruments. He was similarly involved in local affairs.

Printing at Caxton House stopped in 1939, he retired in 1945 and died in 1949.

Post war revamp

Post war it continued for some time as a newsagent under the management of Harry Vamplew but, although used by the local Gas Board in the 1950s, the building became derelict and was demolished in the 70s to make way for the Trustee Savings Bank in 1976.

Like many banks nationwide the TSB closed in 2022.

Domino’s Pizza opened its doors in 2023.
