When the first early medieval parish church had collapsed the town was left without a church so the 15th century Swaffham-born rector, Dr. John Botright, convinced the people of the parish to fund the building of a new one.
The result is a 15th century perpendicular style church with an early 16th century double hammerbeam oak roof and 192 angels carved in chestnut around the top of the walls.
The tower was built early in the 16th century and is decorated with the crossed keys of St Peter and the crossed swords of St Paul. The flèche on top of the tower dates from the 18th century.
Inside there are stained glass windows and pew woodcarvings, including the original Chapman pew, now separated into two sections, with carved images of John Chapman, his wife Cateryne and his dog.
On the north aisle pieces of the original stained glass windows also depict John and Cateryne, and possibly their three children as angels.
Also to be noted is the memorial to Catherine Steward, grandmother to Oliver Cromwell, who held land here and the William Morris World War I memorial window.
