The Old Post Office ...
19 Market Place
Thomas Lindsey appears here, next to The Crown, as a draper and grocer in the 1851 census. By 1871 he still ran his business but was also a landowner and by 1881 had retired to farm Grange Farm on the edge of Sporle.
He held a very active life in the town. For many years he was the chairman of the local Board of Health, a trustee of the Town Estate, and a founder director of the Waterworks company. He is buried in the Baptist graveyard on White Cross Road.
George Bunting took the property over as part of their draper’s business which also took in the eastern half of the Crown Inn in 1870.
It became one of the largest stores in the town, selling a variety of items, including metallic coffins, until its closure in 1929.
In the 1930s S. Fell and Son and The Army and Navy Store occupied the premises but in 1951 they vacated as the building was condemned.
A.D. Bond ran a business here into the late 1970s.
Other businesses here over the years: Gateway – the Swaffham store opened with the construction of the current building and closed for business around 1998. It became Spar between 1998 and 2002. McColls took over (and became the fifth post office) from 2002 and 2023. Morrisons Daily opened on the premises that same year.
